Nancy Dwight of Lyme Receives National Award
Recognized as “Iron Jawed Angel”

Washington, DC—Republican activist Nancy Dwight of Lyme has been selected to receive the Iron Jawed Angel award at the national meeting of the Excellence in Public Service Series programs on Monday, April 21, 2008 in Washington, DC.

The Iron Jawed Angel award was founded to honor women who have demonstrated sustained leadership and excellence in public service, thereby enhancing and promoting the value of female leaders.  Iron Jawed Angel is a term coined by a newspaper reporter in reference to the suffragettes who quietly stood vigil in front of the White House for two years until a Constitutional Amendment was passed providing for a woman’s right to vote.

Noted as a modern day Iron Jawed Angel, Nancy Dwight is being commended for her dedication to the advancement of women and for her own significant contributions to public service. Nancy was a founding member and current finance chairman of the Vesta Roy Excellence in Public Service Series, and was confirmed by the US Senate to the National Museum and Library Services Board. She is chairman of Dwight Partners, a public affairs firm, and a director of Newspapers of New England which publishes several daily and weekly newspapers including the Concord Monitor and the Valley News. She was the first woman to serve as director of the National Republican Congressional Committee.

The Vesta Roy Series was established in 2003 to increase the number and influence of Republican women in elected and appointive government and party positions. Eight women from this year’s class will be present to see Nancy Dwight accept the award in front of a crowd of 250 women leaders from the 20 Excellence in Public Service programs across the country.

VESTA ROY EXCELLENCE IN PUBLIC SERVICE SERIES
ANNOUNCES NEW CLASS FOR 2007-2008

Salem, NH – The Vesta Roy Excellence in Public Service Series announced today their new class of program fellows for 2007-2008. The Vesta Roy Series is a political leadership training program for Republican women who have an interest in politics and public service but have not yet held state elective office. The program provides both informational and skills-building sessions to give participants tools and training to build their confidence and turn interest into activism.

The new class fellows are: Heidi Cole of Manchester; Margaret Crisler of Windham; Robin Flynn of Hampstead; Joan Fulton of Litchfield; Gail Giarrusso of Stratham; Jessica LeCat of Manchester; Jeanine Notter of Merrimack; Beth Perlo of Sugar Hill; and Kathryn Pyle of Rochester.

“We are very proud to be welcoming our fifth Vesta Roy class. This is a group of women that we are certain will make an impact in our communities and in public service to our state,” said Donna Sytek, Chairman of the Vesta Roy Series and a former Speaker of the New Hampshire House of Representatives.

The Vesta Roy class will participate in various training sessions including learning how to write press releases and biographies, how to run meetings, understanding the legislative process, planning campaigns, traveling to Washington, DC to meet and learn tips from staff and members, and hearing personal stories from elected officials. The next program will be held on October 18 at the NH Institute of Politics titled, “New Hampshire Government and the GOP: Where do you fit in?”

The Vesta Roy Excellence in Public Service Series is modeled after the successful Richard G. Lugar Excellence in Public Service Series, which began in Indiana in 1990.

Vesta Roy served as a Rockingham County Commissioner, state representative, and state senator from 1979-1986. As senate president at the time of Governor Hugh Gallen’s death, she served as governor for 7 days prior to the swearing in of Governor John H. Sununu. She was the first female to hold that position.
